CYTER, a maritime cybersecurity specialist, announced on the 22nd that it has signed a multi-party Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Korea University's Maritime Cybersecurity Research Center, Maritime Law Research Center, and autonomous vessel specialist Abicus to collaborate on research and technological development in maritime cybersecurity legal policies and security technologies.
Through this agreement, CYTER and Korea University will work together on policy and technological research to address the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' maritime cybersecurity safety guidelines, as well as regulations from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). Additionally, the collaboration will support enhancing the global competitiveness of domestic shipping companies, shipyards, and maritime equipment manufacturers through research covering autonomous vessels, smart ships, and the defense industry.
Professor Kim In-hyun, Director of Korea University's Maritime Law Research Center, emphasized, "Decarbonization, digitalization, and the development of autonomous vessels in the shipping industry must be continuously promoted. To achieve this, we must standardize our navigation equipment and elevate our position in the international community." CYTER's CEO, Cho Yong-hyun, stated, "Developing cybersecurity technologies for smart ships across the entire lifecycle—from design to construction, sea trials, and operations—requires clear domain knowledge and planning. Through this collaboration in maritime cybersecurity legislation and technology, we will be able to develop security technologies suited for the new maritime mobility market."
Abicus CEO, Lim Do-hyung, expressed, "We hope this collaboration will help address concerns about cyberattacks on autonomous vessels and accelerate the commercialization of autonomous navigation technology. We also hope this will give South Korea the opportunity to lead in cybersecurity technologies, which are central to autonomous vessels." Through this MOU, CYTER will strengthen its leadership in the maritime cybersecurity and technology development fields and focus on developing internationally competitive maritime mobility security technologies.
