Korea Coast Guard Holds 'National Assembly Forum to Respond to Maritime Cyber Threats'

The Korea Maritime Police Agency (KMPA) held a National Assembly forum titled "Strategic Responses to Maritime Cyber Threats" at the National Assembly Hall on the 7th. The forum was organized to facilitate discussions among lawmakers, the private sector, and academia, aiming to build consensus on the digitalization of the maritime industry and establish a nationwide maritime cybercrime response infrastructure. It was co-hosted by Democratic Party lawmakers Shin Jeong-hoon, Seo Sam-seok, Wi Seong-gon, Yoon Jun-byung, and Lee Won-taek, along with National People's Power lawmaker Lee Il-gon, and hosted by the Korea Coast Guard. The event was attended by more than 100 participants, including lawmakers, Korea Coast Guard Commissioner Kim Jong-wook, academics, and members of the shipping industry.

The first presentation was delivered by Dr. Jo Yong-hyun, CEO of DS Lab Company, under the topic "Recent Trends in Maritime Cyber Threats and Countermeasures." Dr. Jo explained the characteristics and definitions of maritime cyber threats, shared examples of maritime cybercrime, reviewed the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) cybersecurity enhancement policies, assessed the current status of maritime cybercrime responses in developed countries, and provided insights into the future of maritime cyber threats. Dr. Jo emphasized, "To strengthen our response to maritime cyber threats, we need to secure specialized personnel, expertise, and technology for maritime cyber investigations while enhancing cooperation among relevant organizations." He added, "Furthermore, smart ships, autonomous ships, shipping companies, and shipyards should adopt technologies to prevent maritime cyber accidents and work to prevent the leakage of key national technologies in the maritime industry, such as those related to autonomous ships."
