On September 22nd, the ‘2023 Maritime & Ship Cybersecurity Workshop’ was held at Korea University’s SK Future Hall. Organized by Korea University’s BK21 FOUR Smart City Security Education and Research Group and the Institute of Information Security, the event marked its 6th year and has established itself as a leading networking and information-sharing platform in the maritime and ship cybersecurity field. This year drew particular attention, with approximately 200 domestic and international shipbuilding, maritime, and security professionals in attendance, ahead of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) cybersecurity regulation enforcement and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ upcoming maritime cyber safety measures announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his opening remarks, Professor Heonyoung Kwon, Dean of Korea University’s Graduate School of Information Security, emphasized “the importance of establishing maritime cyber security,” noting that cybersecurity will become an essential element in manned-unmanned teaming systems such as the Navy’s ‘Navy Sea Ghost.’ Rear Admiral Jungjae Lim, Director of Naval Information Planning, stated in his congratulatory address that cyber threats are expanding beyond traditional military threats into non-military and transnational threats, and expressed his hope that the workshop would serve as an important opportunity to respond to future maritime cyber threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the event, representatives from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Schneider Electric presented on international maritime cybersecurity trends and the importance of security-by-design for vessels. Professor Seungjoo Kim of Korea University explained ship security internalization and RMF standard implementation, while Commander Younghwan Kim of Naval Headquarters presented measures for strengthening naval vessel cybersecurity. Additionally, experts from major institutions and companies \u2014 including Hanwha Systems, Kookmin University, LIG Nex1, Hanwha Ocean, the Korea Coast Guard, MarineWorks, and CYTUR \u2014 delivered presentations on cybersecurity threat trends, response strategies, threat detection technologies, and security design approaches, engaging in in-depth discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The workshop served as a significant occasion for industry-academia-research-government collaboration \u2014 bringing together the Navy, Korea Coast Guard, shipyards, defense companies, shipping lines, and security firms \u2014 to explore measures for strengthening smart ship security. As digitalization of the maritime industry progresses, the necessity of cyber threat response and security internalization for vessels and maritime systems was emphasized, and continued active research and technology development in this field is anticipated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
